Lakeville Time Machine – Episode Two

Filed under: Fun Stuff, Lakeville News — Lakeville KB @ 8:42 am

Welcome back for our second trip back through time! Let’s take another look at some 50s kitchens.

We know Lakeville supplied the beautiful cabinetry…but where did some of the accessories come from?

There’s a good chance that they were acquired with Green Stamps!

For the uninitiated: S&H Green Stamps were sheets of trading stamps given out with purchases at the supermarket, gas station, and other establishments. You pasted them in a special booklet…

…and when it was filled, you could cash them in for merchandise, either at redemption centers or through a catalog.

S&H Green Stamps date back to 1896, but really took off when 50s housewives used them to help stretch the family budget. Their popularity declined in the 1970s, but they are still around – and willing to redeem any stamps you still might have! They’ve also reinvented themselves online, as Green Points:

So the next time you revisit the 50s, take a close look – Green Stamps might’ve gotten more than you think!

Seen and Heard Around the Industry

Filed under: Industry Tidbits — Lakeville KB @ 1:44 pm

• Oil-rubbed bronze has become a popular finish for hardware and other fixtures; it has a warm, old-world look and can be less expensive than pewter finishes.

• The Pascal faucet by Brizo is making quite a splash! A hands-free heat sensor turns on the water when you wave your hands under the spout; an electronic setting differentiates objects that may need to sit in the sink awhile, such as a stack of dishes.

• Cabinet door styles are trending towards the simpler (such as Park Place or Devonshire); colors such as Ginger Snap (a rich deep stain) and Divinity (a white paint) are still going strong.

Lakeville and the Kenya Education Fund

Filed under: Lakeville News — Lakeville KB @ 12:51 pm

The most important thing in the youth of today is education, and no more so than in impoverished Kenya, where it is a lamp leading them out of the darkness of poverty and death.

Lakeville has been supporting the Kenya Education Fund since 2005, starting with a simple $100 gift by company president Richard Sirlin. Mr Sirlin has since become Vice President of the KEF, and Lakeville’s contributions have topped over $12,000.

Lakeville Time Machine – Episode One

Filed under: Fun Stuff, Lakeville News — Lakeville KB @ 9:20 am

Come take a trip with us back to the 1950s…

…when babies were booming, Tupperware parties were all the rage, and Lakeville was on the way to its second successful decade.

Kitchen designs were simpler but no less stylish, with modern finishes and layouts meant to highlight and harmonize with appliances.

What was Mom cooking up in her lovely new Lakeville kitchen?

Maybe a pretty salad… …perhaps some soup…

…or was she a “space-age” Mom who tried the new TV dinners?

Back to the 21st Century, but we’ll visit again soon…

Visit our Facebook page for larger versions of the kitchen photos!

From Galley to Gorgeous

Filed under: Projects and Ideas — Lakeville KB @ 8:19 am

A galley kitchen is one where the cabinets are set in parallel lines along opposing walls, often in a U-shape. While efficient, it can sometimes be a challenge for creative design. With this project, a wall was removed, and the cabinets raised to bring them into the original seating area. The height of the window was also changed. An added island in a contrasting finish completes the transformation to a warm and friendly area perfect for entertaining.

Summer’s Here – Take the Kitchen Outside!

Filed under: Projects and Ideas — Lakeville KB @ 10:03 am

With the warm weather, most of us are spending time gathered with friends around the barbecue. But what if you wanted to take backyard cooking to the next level? An outdoor kitchen might be just the thing. The National Kitchen and Bath Association reports it as one of the hottest and fastest growing markets – and an outdoor kitchen can add significant value to your home.

These can range from a simple grill / storage cabinet combo to a full kitchen layout complete with sink and even electricity. While every design is different, however, they all share the same necessities: a prep area, a place to cook, a storage area, a cleanup secion, and (of course) a place to eat. Kitchen and Bath Ideas, a division of the Better Homes and Gardens website, has a terrific checklist here, perfect for helping you plan out exactly what you will need.

Crystal Cabinets, a Lakeville featured manufacturer, will be offering a line catering (pun intended) to the specific needs of outdoor kitchens coming in Fall 2010. Click here to learn more about Crystal.
