What’s Hot in Countertops

Filed under: Uncategorized — Lakeville KB @ 11:03 am

Countertops have come a long way since the days of humble laminate. Today’s products feature bold colors and surprising additions like texture.

While granite continues to be popular, quartz – with its durable yet high-shine surface – is gaining momentum. Solid surface manufacturers have greatly improved their ability to replicate natural materials, bring it closer to the look of stone while being more low-maintenance[1].

As with cabinetry, grey is a hot color, along with timeless black and white. Caesarstone has launched a line, Motivo, featuring patterns straight out of the fashion magazines, with tactile interest (such as crocodile)[2].

Lakeville Kitchen and Bath offers Caesarstone products as well as a number of other natural stone and solid surface manufacturers. Stop by the Lindenhurst or Smithtown showroom and see which option works best for your kitchen!

Grey is “The New Black” for Kitchens and Baths

Filed under: Industry Tidbits,Projects and Ideas — Lakeville KB @ 4:03 pm

It might not be the first color you think of for kitchen cabinetry, but designers, color experts, and those in the industry are all singing the praises of grey. An article on the K+BB website[1] lauds it as a “go to color…gray even goes with gray”. It is classic yet unexpected, easily complements a number of styles, and looks fresh, especially when done in a matte finish.

Plain and Fancy Custom Cabinetry stated in a recent newsletter[2] that “the great thing about gray cabinets is that…you’re not locked into a single appliance palette”. They, as well as Lakeville’s other manufacturers, offer a number of shades ranging from silver to charcoal – an interesting trend worth checking out.

In addition, it will also show all professionals in the user’s vicinity using the phone’s GPS feature.

Introducing Lakeville Kitchen & Bath Q & A!

Certain questions tend to come up regularly to our salespeople, and we thought we might share a few of them with you. Today’s question concerns something you might not have thought a lot about: the undersides of your cabinets.

Q: Should I finish the undersides of my cabinets to match?

A: Most often they will be under the sight line, so it’s really a matter of preference. If you choose from a semi-custom or full custom line, they will not be raw wood anyway.

Face frame cabinets normally have a 3/4″ recess underneath. Depending on the manufacturer, this can either be finished at the factory to match the doors, or the recess can be eliminated and a flush finish bottom applied instead. Frameless or European-style cabinets have a flush bottom already, but you must specify if you want it finished (usually a special option).

Tip: If using undermount lighting, you may want to consider a piece of decorative moulding to bring the sight line down.

If you have any questions you’d like to see answered here on the LK blog, we welcome your submissions!

Lakeville Time Machine – Episode Two

Filed under: Fun Stuff,Lakeville News — Lakeville KB @ 8:42 am

Welcome back for our second trip back through time! Let’s take another look at some 50s kitchens.

We know Lakeville supplied the beautiful cabinetry…but where did some of the accessories come from?

There’s a good chance that they were acquired with Green Stamps!

For the uninitiated: S&H Green Stamps were sheets of trading stamps given out with purchases at the supermarket, gas station, and other establishments. You pasted them in a special booklet…

…and when it was filled, you could cash them in for merchandise, either at redemption centers or through a catalog.

S&H Green Stamps date back to 1896, but really took off when 50s housewives used them to help stretch the family budget. Their popularity declined in the 1970s, but they are still around – and willing to redeem any stamps you still might have! They’ve also reinvented themselves online, as Green Points:

So the next time you revisit the 50s, take a close look – Green Stamps might’ve gotten more than you think!

Seen and Heard Around the Industry

Filed under: Industry Tidbits — Lakeville KB @ 1:44 pm

• Oil-rubbed bronze has become a popular finish for hardware and other fixtures; it has a warm, old-world look and can be less expensive than pewter finishes.

• The Pascal faucet by Brizo is making quite a splash! A hands-free heat sensor turns on the water when you wave your hands under the spout; an electronic setting differentiates objects that may need to sit in the sink awhile, such as a stack of dishes.

• Cabinet door styles are trending towards the simpler (such as Park Place or Devonshire); colors such as Ginger Snap (a rich deep stain) and Divinity (a white paint) are still going strong.

Lakeville and the Kenya Education Fund

Filed under: Lakeville News — Lakeville KB @ 12:51 pm

The most important thing in the youth of today is education, and no more so than in impoverished Kenya, where it is a lamp leading them out of the darkness of poverty and death.

Lakeville has been supporting the Kenya Education Fund since 2005, starting with a simple $100 gift by company president Richard Sirlin. Mr Sirlin has since become Vice President of the KEF, and Lakeville’s contributions have topped over $12,000.
