Kitchen Styles: Modern vs Traditional

When designing your kitchen you may be trying to decide what style to go for.  Here
we have outlined the elements of both modern and traditional styles. If neither of these
seem right for you, transitional kitchens are a great way to incorporate aspects of each.

Modern
  1. Flat-Panel Cabinet Doors - This style of cabinet door lies flush with no extra details for a sleek and clean look.
  2. Horizontal Lines - Modern kitchens tend to focus on horizontal lines.  This can be from the tiles in the backsplash to the direction of the grains in the cabinets.
  3. Open Layout - Open floor plan kitchens help make the kitchen feel more incorporated into the rest of the house.
  4. Industrial Details - These raw elements have been extremely popular recently.  Ways to add an industrial touch to your kitchen are concrete floors and brushed steel pieces.
  5. Simple and Consistent Accent Pieces - In modern kitchens, accent pieces such as light fixtures and stools will be consistent in color and simplicity.

Traditional
  1. Raised-Panel Cabinet Doors - Unlike the cabinet door style used in modern kitchens, these cabinets will have embellishments and may also have decorative glass inserts.
  2. Neutral Colors - Traditional kitchens tend to have a warmer color pattern that could include beiges, natural wood colors, creams, or greys.
  3. Decorative Accents - Attention to small details is a big aspect of traditional kitchens.  Crown molding, statement range hoods, and other architectural embellishments are often used.
  4. Glazed Cabinet Finishes - Glazes are added to give cabinets an aged antique look that flows with the rest of the details of a traditional kitchen.
  5. Ornamental Light Fixtures - Decorative light fixtures like chandeliers bring the whole traditional style of the kitchen together.
